![]() The success of Avengers: Endgame is the culmination of 21 films in the Marvel superhero universe that started with Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man in 2008. In the US, subscriptions to Disney+ will be priced at $6.99 a month, just over half the monthly cost of Netflix, with a global rollout beginning next year. Disney has already pulled all of its content from Netflix in the US, ahead of a likely global pullout, costing the company hundreds of millions of dollars in licensing revenue in order to make its service a must-buy. Avengers: Endgame is one of many golden properties that will debut exclusively on the service, which launches later this year, before being released elsewhere. While the film may not have performed as strong as the first Black Panther, that film set a high bar, and Wakanda Forever was still inarguably a big success in its own right. The success of the film is a timely reminder that Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+, has the content firepower to challenge global market leader Netflix despite its late entry. Interestingly, just as the first Black Panther had, Wakanda Forever joined the small group of MCU films that grossed more in North America than they did overseas. Globally, it brought in a total of $854 million. It opened to $181 million in North America, where it went on to gross $453 million. Wakanda Forever was a touching tribute to Boseman’s legacy, and it was a film that audiences really responded to. The decision was ultimately made to move forward without T’Challa, focusing Black Panther: Wakanda Foreveron his sister Shuri and the rest of the supporting cast from the first film. Genres Superhero, Action, Adventure, DramaĪfter the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, the Black Panther series was put in a tough situation where it would either need to recast its lead character or move forward without him. The response from audiences and critics to the film was split, as it was the very first MCU film to be hit with a “rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes. ![]() Domestically, Eternals grossed less than Black Widow, but a stronger overseas performance allowed it to pull ahead of that film. It pulled in $164 million in North America and a total of just over $400 million worldwide. The box office was in a much better position than it had been with Black Widow (though it wasn’t entirely back to normal), and yet the film opened with just $70 million and lost steam quickly after that. Eternals was billed as an epic lore and story-driven chapter of the MCU, but it ultimately failed to connect with audiences. The film had the advantage of having the prestige filmmaker Chloé Zhao, who had just won several Oscars for her film Nomadland, on board as the director. Released only a few months later, Eternalswas the third film of Phase Four when it opened in November 2021. Genres Superhero, Action, Adventure, Fantasy Updated October 21, 2023: If you're a fan of the MCU, you'll be happy to know that this article has been updated with additional information by Jack Deegan. With grosses courtesy of The Numbers, here’s how every film from the MCU’s Phase Four ranks in terms of box office. Now that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is firmly into Phase 5, it's time to look back and see which movies in the previous phase brought in the most amount of money. This dramatically affected the box office of Phase Four’s films, especially towards the beginning, but things finally started to get back to normal in the latter half of the phase. The phase as a whole was somewhat delayed, as the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic globally essentially shut down the entire entertainment industry. The total runtime for Phase Four is larger than all of those combined, with 60 hours of movies, television, and specials. To put that into perspective, Phase One had a total runtime of 12 hours 24 minutes, Phase Two came in at 12 hours 38 minutes, and Phase Three was a big jump to 24 hours 57 minutes. Eight of those projects were original series with two original specials on Disney+, while 7 were feature films. While Phases One and Two consisted of 6 films each, and Phase Three was 11, Phase Four comprised 17 total projects. ![]() Even though the phase lasted just two years, it was the most extensive of any yet. ![]() Phase Four of the MCU began in early 2021 with WandaVision and was wrapped up by the end of 2022 with The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
